What it is
Ipamorelin is a lab-made peptide in the growth hormone secretagogue family. It acts like ghrelin, a hunger hormone that also tells the pituitary to release growth hormone.
It was designed to be more selective than older peptides in this group, with less effect on cortisol and prolactin in early studies.
US regulatory status
Not FDA-approved. The FDA lists ipamorelin among bulk substances that may present significant safety risks in compounding (Category 2).
What the research shows
Ipamorelin was tested in humans for bowel recovery after surgery (postoperative ileus), and a phase 2 trial did not show a clear benefit, so development stopped. Claims about muscle, fat loss or anti-aging rely mostly on animal data and anecdote.
How it is given
Subcutaneous injection (unapproved)
Commonly reported side effects
- Injection site reactions
- Headache
- Flushing
- Increased hunger
- Water retention
- Limited human safety data
Questions to ask your provider
- What does the research really show about ipamorelin in humans?
- Are there FDA-approved treatments for my goal that have stronger evidence?
- What are the risks of products labeled "research use only," and how would I know what is really in them?
