What it is
Selank is a synthetic peptide based on tuftsin, a small immune peptide, with a few amino acids added to make it last longer. It was developed in Russia.
It is used there as a nasal spray for anxiety. Researchers think it may affect GABA signaling and brain chemicals linked to mood.
US regulatory status
Not FDA-approved. It is approved in Russia; in the US it was nominated for compounding and the nomination was withdrawn, so it is not an accepted bulk substance.
What the research shows
Most studies come from Russian research groups and are small. Some reported reduced anxiety, but independent, large, well-controlled trials are lacking.
How it is given
Nasal spray (approved outside the US)
Commonly reported side effects
- Nasal irritation
- Tiredness
- Headache
- Limited safety data outside Russia
